Park Avenue classes raise and release monarch butterflies

Kindergarten and third grade students at Park Ave Elementary School recently had the opportunity to observe the complete life cycle of monarch butterflies right in their classrooms!

The hands-on science experience brought learning to life as students watched tiny caterpillars grow, form chrysalises to eventually emerging as beautiful butterflies. The project had students deeply engaged in scientific inquiry, carefully observing and recording the different stages of the butterfly life cycle. The students used their observations to ask pertinent questions and make predictions along the way. They eagerly anticipated which caterpillar would be the first to form a chrysalis and which chrysalis would, in turn, be the first to hatch into a butterfly.

Through their observation and discussion around butterflies, the students learned that all living things have different life cycles, growing and changing over time. They also strengthened their writing skills by documenting their observations and writing about the changes they noticed. Their writing reflected not only their collected scientific data, but also their excitement at witnessing each stage of development.

The project concluded with a very special event—releasing the butterflies into our school's pollinator garden. As the butterflies fluttered away, students celebrated the culmination of weeks of learning and observation. This memorable experience helped foster curiosity, wonder, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world!
