WVMS musicians take part in the OCMEA Jr. High All-County Festival

Warwick Valley Middle School students joined fellow standout musicians from around the county last weekend for the Orange County Music Educators Association (OCMEA) Junior High All-County Festival, which took place in Monroe.

"The junior high all-county ensembles include students from all over Orange County who are accepted to perform after preparing and performing audition solos earlier in the year," explained WVMS general music teacher and chorus director Shane Peters. "This is a great achievement and honor, and our students work so hard on their auditions. We are very proud of everyone who participated!"  

The audition process includes preparing a solo piece of the students choice, as well as sight reading a piece of music and demonstrating proficiency in multiple scales. The junior high all-county festival is an annual two-day event during which student musicians exercise their creativity and collaboration skills. The ensembles polish their programs during two days of intensive rehearsal before presenting them in concert on the second day. They also have a blast meeting new people and even reconnecting with all-county friends from past years.

"These OCMEA events give our students wonderful opportunities to work with guest conductors and meet musicians from other districts," Mr. Peters said about how participation in OCMEA programs can broaden students' overall experience. "And, they really enjoy the challenge of learning songs of a high caliber."
